CHRISTIAN OPHTHALMOLOGY SOCIETY

We had the opportunity to attend the 36th Annual Christian Ophthalmology Society meeting in Savannah, Georgia. The meeting was informative and encouraging. It was confirmed during the meeting that 47% of all eye diseases in the world occur in Sub-Sahara Africa. There were interesting discussions pertaining to the treatment of adult cataracts in the face of limited resources as is often the case in developing nations. Ophthalmologists discussed various mission trips and encouraged other ophthalmologists to also go on short term mission trips.

COLOMBIA

The Lord has opened a great door of ministry for APM (Alabaster Project Ministry), in Central and South America. God has called and equipped us to be a conduit for all Latinos who are called to minister among unreached people groups in Africa and beyond. To this end, APM is recruiting and training Latino missionaries for the 10/40 Window in particular, and unreached people groups in general. We traveled extensively in Colombia and Mexico, sharing the vision with many leaders of churches and missionary organizations. God is at work!

LENS METER

Recently, we purchased a lens meter. This equipment allows lay persons to read the prescriptions of all types of previously owned eyeglasses. Above is a picture of King as he is being trained how to use the lens meter. We were trained how to distinguish progressive lens from single vision lenses; then the proper way to place the eyeglasses in the lens meter which is connected to a laptop that has the specially developed software which ascertains the prescriptions. The lens meter really is amazing and not difficult to use at all

MICROSCOPE FOR EYE CLINIC

The eye clinic at Bethany Village is equipped with a surgical unit. This unit is being furnished with an ophthalmological OR scope and surgical instruments; in anticipation of starting cataracts, glaucoma, pterygium and trachoma surgeries in the very near future. This is very good news indeed, since about 47% of all eye diseases occur in sub-Sahara Africa. Many blind people shall see! Thank God.

TEACH TO TRANSFORM

Last November we attended a “Teach to Transform” conference. A number of doctors and other professionals have come together to go into developing nations and share their skills with the indigenous people, which will help those nations become self-sustaining and productive. King was invited to share how the dental and eye care services are helping to reach the unreached as well as provide indigenous people with the opportunity to meet the healthcare needs in remote places.

When we study the scriptures carefully we will not find a mandate to go and financially support another nation.

However, Jesus did command us to go and make disciples. Disciples lead disciplined lives, following the commandments of God. One of the Ten Commandments addresses work ethics. All men should work to provide for their families, as well as helping their neighbors..
